Never in the history of the United States has there been so much interest in food. Is it healthy, is it sustainable? At the same time, an important aspect of food is being forgotten: the people who pick, prepare and process it.

The camera follows a group of tomato pickers from Florida who disagree with the power of the supermarkets. Called The Coalition of Immokalee Workers, the group opposes to the low prices paid by the major supermarkets; companies with turnovers larger than Apple, Google or Monsanto.

Food Chains depicts a modern form of slavery and the circumstances under which it occurs. The tens of thousands of labourers who pick, prepare or process our food and earn 50 cents for a bucket of produce that costs dozens of dollars in the supermarket. From Florida to California, Latinos, Asians, Africans and Native Americans work in appalling conditions for a pittance.

Eva Longoria, the film’s executive producer, shows the men who toil and the women who are abused. The documentary aims not only to draw attention to the problem but also to show that consumers have the power to address the problem.

Food Chains will have its Dutch premiere at the Food Film Festival and has been selected for the FFF Feature-Length Food Film Competition 2014.
