In the Bulgarian village of Satovchka, problems are solved around the table. The village’s aging population have formed alliances which, despite their different religions and beliefs, coexist more or less peacefully. In this microcosm, they are linked by a common past and something simpler: food.

In Soul Food Stories, we meet seven of the village’s male inhabitants. They are Muslim, Gypsy, Christian and Communist and have progressive or conservative views. The men meet almost every evening to talk about the past, the present, women and religion.

Most young people have left the village and modern inventions, such as television, are not appreciated by everyone. Since the arrival of television, women have started talking back and fewer children are being born, says one of the men. The division of labour between men and women in Satovchka is traditional, as are the meals.

Although all gatherings and celebrations are accompanied by copious amounts of food, the men rarely talk about the meals they consume. Cooking and eating are taken for granted, and run as a motif through the tragicomic scenes. The villagers are a wonderful example of how, despite fundamental differences, people can still sit around the same table. And that makes Soul Food Stories as timeless as it is topical.

Soul Food Stories was screened at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, the largest documentary film festival in the world. The Food Film Festival collaborates with IDFA to bring you the best food documentaries.
