It is the most widely used seasoning in our kitchens. In this magical documentary, filmmaker Farida Pacha follows a family of seasonal labourers who head into the relentless Indian desert to extract salt.

The vast salt pans in the northwest of India produce the world’s whitest crystals. Each year, thousands of Indian families migrate to the pans to extract what they can from this desolate landscape. For eight months of the year, Sanabhai and his family dig, trample and rake their salt fields.

When the monsoon rains recede, pumps are installed to draw the briny water below the surface into the salt pans. Over several months, punctuated only by the rhythmic drone of the pumps, the water evaporates and salt crystals begin to form.

By the end of the season, the crystals are large enough to be collected and transported to towns and cities. The labourers pack their meagre belongings and return to their villages before the rains wash away what was their home. The salt people may be poor, but they are proud of what they produce.

My Name Is Salt won the Best First Appearance Award 2013 at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, the largest documentary film festival in the world. The Food Film Festival collaborates with IDFA to bring you the best food documentaries.
