As a restaurant critic Johannes van Dam was both famous and infamous. He could make or break a restaurant in Het Parool newspaper. De keuken van Johannes (Johannes' kitchen) is an intimate portrait of the food writer who passed away last year.

Right before Van Dam died in September 2013, filmmaker Bianca Tan followed him while doing his daily groceries and during public appearances. She also filmed the food writer in his tiny Amsterdam apartment, completely filled with thousands of cookbooks.

We get a glimpse of how the restaurant critic, who never shared much of his private life, worked, accompanied by his assistant and beloved cat. Because the camera gets so close, we become part of his kitchen. It's an intimacy that's both uncomfortable and moving.
