Agribusinesses and investors are increasingly driving small farmers off their land, particularly in the world’s poorest countries. According to local leaders, the farmers do not own the land, although they have often lived on it for generations. These farmers are dependent on the land and its loss also means the loss of their home and livelihood.

No Land No Food No Life explores the impact of land grabbing on small farming communities in Africa and Asia. Villages in Mali, Uganda and Cambodia reveal a worrying trend: farmers have been expelled from their land by agribusinesses and international investors. These businesses are often welcomed by local governments with open arms, without proper consultation or adequate compensation for the original owners.

The documentary gives a voice to the communities that are fighting to maintain control of their land. "We will never give up our land. It would be like dying,” says a woman from Mali. The combination of situations in different parts of the world and personal stories make the extent of the problem clear: land grabbing could aggravate both food and climate crises. But can the farmers still win their battle? Land is worth gold and the farmers have few resources to fall back on.

After the screening on Friday Oxfam Novib Lobbyist Monique van Zijl, who has been fighting land grabs for years, will be present for a Q&A. Oxfam Novib wants the 10 largest food companies in the world to use their influence for a more fair food system. With their international Behind the Brands campaign, they put firm pressure on the "Big Ten” to address the injustice in their supply chains. Monique van Zijl knows all about the results achieved and the challenges yet to pay attention to.

No Land No Food No Life was screened at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, the largest documentary film festival in the world. The Food Film Festival collaborates with IDFA to bring you the best food documentaries.
