Mouthwatering movies: Yvette van Boven

Each week in Mouthwatering movies, a well-known person from the food or film world tells us about his or her most memorable, sensual or belly-shaking film scene or food film. We kick off with Yvette van Boven, food stylist, illustrator and cookbook author.

"My all-time favourite food film is Ratatouille. For 500 reasons. Firstly, of course, because it is a wonderful story with a fantastic theme. Secondly, it's about Paris ('all this time I was in Pawis?') and that appeals to me because I spend part of my time there. Remy, the anthropomorphic rat that plays the lead role, looks so much like my dog Marie that I always feel like I am in fact watching Marie. In addition, all the details are spot-on: how things are prepared, how a kitchen is run ('keep your workstation clean!) – everything is accurate.

My favourite scene is when all the rats are cooking in the kitchen of a fancy restaurant. It's great to see them all chopping, mixing and seasoning. It reminds me of a film I loved as a child: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. There's a scene at the beginning where the children's father, who is an inventor, makes breakfast for them with a machine that cooks eggs and makes toast. I thought that was so cool. There are similarities with the scene of the cooking rats, just without a Meccano machine but instead a well-oiled machine of 300 rats.

Another great scene is when Remy teaches Linguini, the garbage boy from the restaurant whom he befriends, to cook in his attic room. As if Linguini were a puppet, Remy gives him instructions by pulling his hair.

Ratatouille is not so much a film that whets your appetite – and that’s not the point of it either. It’s about the love of cooking. I hardly dare to admit how many times I've seen it – so many it's embarrassing. And I might watch it again this weekend!"

About Ratatouille
Ratatouille
is an animated Walt Disney and Pixar film from 2007. The directors were meticulous in their research. One of them, Brad Bird, once even worked in one of Thomas Keller's restaurants in Paris. The film was screened at last year's Food Film Festival because we never tire of it either. It won several major awards, including an Oscar for best animated film.
