Long live the Food Film Festival... Long live the spring!

Long live the Food Film Festival... Long live the spring!

We gathered around a table months ago to lay the foundations of the third Food Film Festival. Which films? Which logo? Which theme for the Great Debate? Who would be our keynote speaker? It was the middle of the summer and a good time to start making plans.

In September we saw the dark winter approaching. Time for us as the festival team to start preparing for a new year... a new spring, with the Food Film Festival as an early bloomer in the festival season. Gradually, our ideas began to take shape and the FFF team was expanded with new faces – all ready to make the Food Film Festival 2013 even better than previous years.

After March last year it took us quite some time to recover from the overwhelming second edition of our festival. The frenzied food feast had taken its toll on all of us. We returned from battle tired, exhausted but happy. Surpassing a first success requires more commitment and a large dose of creativity. The bar was high. But after three well-attended days in Studio/K we could be proud of what we had achieved. Another great festival full of energy, wonderful stories, discussion and pleasure; a festival that has, thanks to the dedication of so many, quickly become an important reference point in the year; a festival that is a gauge of what is happening in the Dutch food world, a festival that serves as an indicator of new trends and developments, is a meeting place for passionate producers and consumers, a platform for discussion, and an outlet for food films from all over the world.

The Food Film Festival 2012 opened with the extraordinary film Mugaritz, an army of chefs once again cooked up a storm in the kitchen, there were well-attended debates, a whole delegation of young people visited from abroad, sausage-makers gave lessons in our workshop space, party animals danced late into the night, happy people joined us for early breakfasts and we had a huge amount of fun behind the scenes! The great photos, videos, positive reactions from visitors, speakers, filmmakers and partners were enough to sustain us for months afterwards and to inspire us to regroup in the summer for a new challenge: making the Food Film Festival 2013 just as successful.

This year marks the third edition of the Food Film Festival. For the third time we will usher in the spring, this year with more space for the market on Timorplein, extra screenings in Kriterion, more community events in Oost, another talented kitchen team, a series of inspiring films, crazy parties, an exciting food quiz, informative and tasty workshops, breakfasts, art, debates, our talk show and a very special keynote speaker who, following previous appearances by Vandana Shiva and Tim Lang, will close the festival. We can no longer squeeze all of this into three days and so this year we are starting the festival early on Friday. That means even more films, workshops and events to enjoy!

There is still so much to do to make all of this reality. It's still winter, after all, and we've almost forgotten what the sun looks like. That's why we've chosen the paper artwork by young French designer Alexis Facca as our sunny, eye-catching logo this year. It proves that food is an inspiration for many of us. Food inspires us to make art, direct a film, conduct research, change the status quo, start a movement, cook a special meal, tell stories and organise a fantastic festival. We hope to show you all of this at the third edition of the Food Film Festival on 22, 23 and 24 March 2013. Stay tuned...!
