Crops

Crops

Gerco de Ruijter | Netherlands | 3 min

Crops is a mesmerising stop-motion film made with images collected from Google Earth. Gerco de Ruijter cut more than a thousand irrigation circles from Google Earth for an experimental video collage about irrigation systems in the United States.

Sprinklers rotate around a central point and irrigate round fields of grain, corn and alfalfa. In the South and Midwest of the United States, these circles fit perfectly into the square grid created by the Public Land Survey after the Civil War. Crops is thus a film about agriculture and geometry: farming, circles and squares.
