During Ethiopia’s long dry season, the Borana’s ‘singing wells’ are the only source of water for the tribe and their livestock. These wells, which occupy a special place in the community, are managed according to a system that guarantees access to fresh water for all.

Singing as they work, young men draw the water from the deep craters using a manual ‘terrace system’ to lighten the load. Plastic buckets represent progress; otherwise traditions remain intact.

The Well underscores what we all know, but often forget: the importance of water. Without water there would be no plants, without plants there would be no livestock, without livestock there would be no food and without food we would not survive. It is a basic truth that the Borana pastoralists pass from one generation to the next.
