Fresh mussels are pure nectar for aficionados. The start of Zeeland’s mussel season is eagerly anticipated and the shellfish is celebrated far beyond the Dutch borders. L’Amour des Moules follows this local product from seed to plate and along the way introduces us to the people whose lives are intertwined with it.
Romance plays an unexpected role. The story of the mussel is told through stunning cinematography and compelling music. And although the way in which the critters reproduce may be less than passionate, the people in whose lives the shellfish features are. Star chef Sergio Herman of Oud Sluis, for instance, began his cooking career in his father’s restaurant with this simple dish and saw it as a challenge to elevate the ‘common food’ to haute cuisine.
At the same time, traditional mussel fishermen are under pressure from government regulations and environmental organisations intent on restricting their livelihood. Initiatives are in place to make the mussel industry sustainable by 2020 and the future seems to lie in the hands of mussel farmers.L’Amour des Moules also shows the mussel in a new, unexpected light: as a miracle drug in the operating theatre of a hospital. Polaris depicts the lives of migrant fishermen in Scotland. Local employees are unwilling to do the work that Filipinos do on the fishing boats: it is dangerous, repetitive and exhausting. The only contact that the Filipinos have with their families back home is an occasional short telephone call, if they can get through. A film of fixed tableaux and little dialogue, which reflects on the role of work in our lives. |
