Fazil's wife dies during childbirth. Devastated, he finds himself having to look for food for his new-born son. The boy refuses powdered milk and so Fazil goes in search of lactating surrogate mothers. In rural Iran, it is an uncomfortable request that he is nevertheless obliged to make.

In addition, the boy’s insatiable appetite means that the initially benevolent mothers soon walk the other way when they see Fazil coming. They want to have enough milk left for their own children.

The boy, who is called Amir Ali, thrives, but his father continues to grieve the loss of his wife. What’s more, the women who fed the boy believe that he is indebted to them and give him all kinds of odd jobs. The result is as tragic as it is comical: the Amir Ali grows up motherless, but surrounded by surrogate mothers who think he should help them with the laundry.

Hotchpotch is about our first and most meaningful source of nourishment: breast milk; nourishment that comes from a unique bond between mother and child which is difficult to replace.
