A Recipe of Harmony

A Recipe of Harmony

Zhang Yan | Netherlands | 2012 | 6.05 min

In her graduation project A Recipe of Harmony, Zhang Yan uses food to convey traditional Chinese culture and customs. Four dishes in five colours represent the 'five elements philosophy'.

The five elements philosophy is a combination of five materials essential to life: water, earth, fire, metal and wood. They create a dynamic balance, like yin and yang. Yan chose the colours black and white, red, yellow and blue-green, and selected the food on the basis of these colours. The symbolic meaning of the food subsequently gave rise to four harmonious ingredients: balance, love, regeneration and peace.
