Old Amsterdam Food Tour met Carolyn Steel & CITIES

Old Amsterdam Food Tour with Carolyn Steel & CITIES

Carolyn Steel & Anke de Vrieze | 120 min | English spoken
Voorstelling: Sunday 24 March 13:00 | Start: Nieuwmarkt

You are what you eat. But the fact that our cities are shaped by the way we eat and produce food is not something we often stop to think about. In this city walk, architect and writer Carolyn Steel and Anke de Vrieze from CITIES show you a new side of Amsterdam.

Carolyn Steel's book Hungry City is a must read for anyone interested in how food has shaped the past and present. In her book Carolyn uses food as a means to better understand and plan cities and explains how a better relationship between urban dwellers and what they eat can help to solve the food problem.

Inspired by Steel’s book, the CITIES platform recently started running Old Amsterdam Food Tours: a city walk and cycling tour that takes in the places that developed out of the human need for food, long before there were supermarkets where it sometimes seems as if food magically appears on the shelves. Centuries ago food – and food producers – had a much more prominent place in the city. How were cities designed around them?

On Sunday 24 March, Carolyn Steel and the people from CITIES are organising a special edition of the Old Amsterdam Food Tour. On foot and by bike, Carolyn and Anke will take you to the places that have played an important role in Amsterdam’s food history, such as the Dam, Nieuwmarkt and the Cattle Market. Of course, the tour will end at the Food Film Festival's own food market, because we hope that the emergence of markets will contribute to building a better relationship between people and food.

PLEASE NOTE: this tour will run on Sunday 24 March at 13.00 on Nieuwmarkt (in front of the Waag). The tour ends at the Food Film Festival Market. Part of the tour will be on foot, part will be on bike. If you want to join the tour, you have to BRING YOUR OWN BIKE to Nieuwmarkt! Tickets are €15.

The Old Amsterdam Food Tour is run by CITIES. If you are interested in taking the tour but have already bought film tickets for Sunday, or the tour is sold out, you can still reserve a place for another date.
