The Hamburger Scenes

The Hamburger Scenes

Louise Fresco, Helen Westerik | 60 min | Dutch spoken
Voorstelling: Friday 22 March 17:00 | Rabozaal (SK/3)

Louise Fresco and Helen Westerik wrote a book about the role of food in feature films. In The Hamburger Scenes they discuss the role of fast food and in particular the hamburger in feature films.

Louise Fresco and Helen Westerik have demonstrated convincingly in previous readings and their book Betrayal, Seduction and Reconciliation that much can be deduced from feature films about the importance of food in social relationships. This year they go a step further by looking specifically at the hamburger, a symbol of ruin and renewal, of abundance and excess, of Western decadence and allure – a complex symbol that Fresco also used as the theme of her book Hamburgers in Paradise.

Fresco and Westerik will discuss the hamburger using fragments from feature films and documentaries, with Andy Warhol’s circumspect consumption of a hamburger promising to be a highlight.
